Penguins Facing Difficult Ultimatum With Key Defenseman Ahead of Free Agency

After contending for so many years, the Pittsburgh Penguins have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in three straight seasons, and now, they've got some key decisions to make on the future of the organization.

Many are looking to trade decisions on Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang and Rickard Rakell, as well as their potential pursuit of some top free agents, but beyond that, they've got other calls to make.

One of the key free agents from their team is defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who tallied a solid 1 goal and 40 points in 82 games played in his first season for the team in 2024/25.

While the underlying numbers on Grzelcyk aren't fantastic, he was very solid for a team that struggled last season, and at 31-years of age, he can either fill a spot on their blue line until they get younger, or the team can take a risk on a big free agent signing or trade.

That means that Grzelcyk's future will be key for GM Kyle Dubas, as the decision to keep or move on from the veteran will effect how they treat the rest of the blue line, but if they do indeed decide to trade the likes of either Karlsson or Letang, there's a chance that a short-term deal could be the best move for the team.

Ultimately, most Penguins fans saw what a good job Grzelcyk did on a struggling Penguins team in 2024/25 and would enjoy having him back for cheap, but with other teams looking for good veteran depth, there will no doubt be plenty of interest in him league wide.
