The Penguins suffered a completely embarrassing loss at home against the San Jose Sharks, losing 6-5 in OT after leading 5-1 in the third period in an utter collapse.

The Pittsburgh Penguins completely collapsed at home today against the San Jose Sharks, losing 6-5 in OT after leading 5-1 in the third period.
Sharks defenseman John Klingberg, playing in his first year in a Sharks sweater, converted on a 2-on-1 rush in OT with sophomore forward Macklin Celebrini and fired home the GWG, completing the historic comeback for San Jose and sealing an embarrassing fate for Pittsburgh.
Longtime Sharks announcer Randy Hahn nearly lost his voice calling the OT GWG in excitement:
The Sharks made franchise history in the process, as they had never before won a game while trailing by four goals in the third period in any of their previous 33 years as a team.
Penguins forward Bryan Rust, who hit the post on San Jose's empty net that would have sealed a win, was almost despondent after the game.
We're pros, we've got to get the job done. I think you've just got to play harder and simplify. I think just get the puck out of the zone and make sure that everyone is doing their job.

Defenseman Erik Karlsson also spoke about the recent trend of blown leads and is adamant it needs to stop immediately.
It's obviously something we're gonna have to figure out if we're gonna be fighting for a playoff spot this year.

The Penguins Hadn't Blown a Four-Goal 3rd Period Lead Since 1976

The Sharks set history by coming back for the first time down by four goals in the third period, and the Penguins made some history of their own.
The last time the Penguins failed to win a game that they were leading by four goals in the third period was 1976.
The Penguins have now lost four games in a row, which included allowing a game-tying goal against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday with less than a second left in regulation.
