The hockey world was shaken to its core today with the news that former Penguins GM Ray Shero had passed away, and Sidney Crosby has done a heartwarming gesture.

Ray Shero, the former Pittsburgh Penguins general manager, died earlier today at age 62. Though the official cause of death is not known, it is believed that he was fighting a type of cancer.
Shero was named the Penguins' GM in 2006, replacing Craig Patrick, and served in that role through 2014. His tenure was marked by aggressive, win-now moves that built a championship-contending team.
During his time, the Penguins captured their third Stanley Cup in 2009. Two of his biggest trades were signing star forwards Marian Hossa in 2008 and Jarome Iginla in 2013.
After leaving Pittsburgh, Shero became the New Jersey Devils' GM, and in recent years was a senior advisor to Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin, one of several NHL executives coached by Shero.
Others include Tom Fitzgerald, the current GM of the Devils, and Jason Botterill, Seattle's assistant GM.
Despite having spent time in the Boston area, Shero was in Pittsburgh as recently as December, watching Kevin Stevens and Matt Cullen become members of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

The post addressed the personal bond they shared and how Shero left everyone around him with a lasting impression, not just as a hockey executive, but as a person.
Ray Shero has a permanent legacy in the NHL as a gentleman remembered for building championship clubs, but more so for guiding the careers and lives of all those he came in contact with.
