Marc-Andre Fleury was traded from Chicago to Minnesota late in his career, but according to speculation, he was almost dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a deal that would have shaken up Toronto's core and given them a chance at the Stanley Cup.
The Chicago Blackhawks would eventually trade veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to his final NHL home in the Minnesota Wild, but according to recent reports, they once had a much bigger trade on the table.
According to Adam Wylde of SDPN, General Manager's Kyle Dubas (Toronto) and Kyle Davidson (Chicago) once had this blockbuster trade deal prepared before Brendan Shanahan nixed the idea completely.
To Toronto: Brandon Hagel Marc-André Fleury (extended)
To Chicago: Matthew Knies (rights) Petr Mrázek 2022 Toronto 1st (top 10 protected) (Rinzel) 2023 Toronto 1st (top 10 protected) (Cowan. Nadeau?)
In this deal, the Maple Leafs would have got Fleury as well as Brandon Hagel, who has become a massive star with the Tampa Bay Lightning, but would have involved them missing out on some intriguing young names like Easton Cowan, who is seen as a key piece of this teams future beyond 2024/25.
Fleury ended up being traded for a conditional second-round draft pick, but in this deal, Chicago would have landed two first-round draft picks and the rights to Matthew Knies, and in the deal they would have moved Hagel, who they ultimately dealt for two firsts and Taylor Raddysh.
At the end of the day however, it was Shanahan that nixed the deal, and while keeping Knies appears to be a fantastic move, the opportunity to get a proven star like Fleury could have completely changed the franchise, but for now, we'll never know how things would have panned out.
