Alex Ovechkin Shares Powerful Message About His NHL Goals Record Being Broken
Alex Ovechkin is the NHL's all-time leader in goals, and when asked about his record being broken, he shared that he believes someone will break that record.
The story of the 2024/25 NHL season was Alex Ovechkin's chase for the NHL's all-time goal scoring record, and on Long Island, he managed to surpass Wayne Gretzky, claiming his piece of NHL history in the process.
With The Great 8 likely to finish his career with well over 900 goals, it would be a monumental mountain to climb for someone, but Ovechkin believes there are players that could pass his record currently playing in the game today.
"God willing, someone will break my record. I won't name names, there are a lot of talented and great players. If that happens, then of course I will congratulate that player, just like Gretzky congratulated me."
As he mentioned, Ovechkin showed his class, noting that if it ever does happen, just like Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe before him, he will be in attendance to congratulate that player.
"I think it's great, and if he does get there, and if he does break my record, I said I would be the first guy there to shake his hand."
Those were Ovi's comments from back in 2020, showing just how long we've all known that he would pass the record for, and after Wayne Gretzky made his public support for Ovechkin known during his chase, he will seemingly do the same for the next player that reaches history.
It's unclear which current players Ovechkin believes could pass his record, with Auston Matthews potentially the most likely to do it, but whenever it happens, expect the same excitement and pageantry that we saw for the 2025 celebration in New York for Ovechkin.
