However, at the time of the two having dinner over the Four Nations break, it was all but a guarantee that he passes the record, and with four goals in three games this month, he's now on the verge of becoming the NHL's all-time goal scoring leader, a race that has been years in the making.

Throughout his career, many fans and other players have been waiting for Ovechkin to have a major fall off, but that's simply never happened as he has remained one of the most consistent goal scorers in league history, and with the support of all his Russian and Washington Capitals teammates, it's a matter of when, not if he passes Gretzky now.
