Evegni Malkin Shares Special Moment with Alex Ovechkin Before he Breaks the Record
Alex Ovechkin is on the verge of breaking a once unbreakable NHL record, and his Russian teammate has revealed a meeting the two had a few weeks ago.
After two decades of brilliance on the ice, Alex Ovechkin moved one step further to passing Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record with a double on Friday as he officially tied The Great One.
This has been a long time coming, with many believing that it would happen in 2025/26, but with 41 goals at the age of 39, he's ready to pass what was once considered an unbreakable record.
Now, Pittsburgh Penguins and Russian icon
Evgeni Malkin has looked back on a meeting the two had a few months ago, revealing that a few years ago, he believed that Ovechkin wasn't going to be able to pass the record.
"I want to say a couple of years ago, I would not believe he could break the record. Now, it's no choice."
Throughout his career, many fans and other players have been waiting for Ovechkin to have a major fall off, but that's simply never happened as he has remained one of the most consistent goal scorers in league history, and with the support of all his Russian and Washington Capitals teammates, it's a matter of when, not if he passes Gretzky now.
