Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin broke a record held by Penguins legend Jaromir Jagr tonight.
Ovechkin and the Capitals hosted the 31st-place Chicago Blackhawks tonight in what was a highly-anticipated matchup.
There was so much drama and hype leading into the game due to the fact that coming into it, Ovechkin was just two goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky with 894 and just three from claiming the new record for himself outright.
Low and behold, Ovechkin was in prime form tonight as he found the back of the net twice to tie Gretzky's record.
However, he was unfortunately unable to complete the hat trick to break the record, despite some late chances.
That being said, Ovi's second goal of the game would go on to stand as the game winner, giving him 136 career game-winning goals.
With the goal, he broke a tie with Jaromir Jagr for the most game-winners in a career all-time.
This is just another feather in the cap for Ovechkin, giving him yet another all-time record.
He now is in sole possession of most career shots on goal, powerplay goals, and game winning goals, and is tied with Gretzky for most career goals.
At this point is is practically expected that he will break that record in the Capitals' next game against the New York Islanders on Sunday.
Regardless, be sure to tune in on Sunday as there is a very good chance Ovechkin will cement himself in the history books with arguably the most important individual record in NHL history.
