The Detroit Red Wings made a major change in leadership in late December with the termination of coach Derek Lalonde; are more changes coming this summer?
Following their
13-17-4 start to the year, Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman decided that he'd seen enough and made a major change behind the bench.
He terminated head coach Derek Lalonde and defensive assistant Bob Boughner; in their places, he hired former 2008 Stanley Cup-winning assistant Todd McLellan.
Also arriving in Detroit was McLellan's longtime assistant coach Trent Yawney, who had worked with him with both the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings.
While McLellan and Yawney soon helped the Red Wings get right back into the thick of the playoff race with a pair of 7-game winning streaks, they struggled in March and eventually missed the playoffs for a 9th straight year.
McLellan will be in Detroit for the foreseeable future, as he was signed to a multi-year extension upon his arrival back in Detroit. But are there going to be changes made to the staff this summer?
Per David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Red Wings are reportedly considering moves to the staff, though no specifics were offered.
Not sure on the timing, but I'm hearing the Red Wings and head coach Todd McLellan will be making some changes to the coaching staff brass.
One potential possibility is that other NHL clubs could be thinking of extending an offer to Detroit assistant coach Alex Tanguay, a former NHL All-Star who oversaw Detroit's strong power-play.
Additional possibilities include holders from Lalonde's time in Detroit like assistant coach Jay Varady or goaltending coach Alex Westlund.
