The Penguins lost out on one of their top forward targets during the opening days of free agency, as he decided to sign with the Boston Bruins instead.
Blumel, 25, has spent the last three seasons within the Dallas Stars organization, primarily with their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. He had a standout season last year with 39 goals and 33 assists in 67 AHL contests, and 16 points in 14 playoff games.
Though he had a banner year, he was unable to break into Dallas' NHL lineup full-time, dressing for seven games and scoring one goal.
Drafted originally 100th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2019, the Czech winger has scored two goals in 13 career NHL contests.
The one-way nature of his new deal, securing the same pay irrespective of the league he plays in, was probably an important consideration when he decided to depart Dallas.
Per NHL insider Dominik Dubovci, the Pittsburgh Penguins were the other finalists competing to secure Blumel's services before he signed with Boston.
Blumel likely saw a clearer path to NHL ice time with the Bruins
With the Bruins providing a clearer path to NHL ice time and a guaranteed salary, Blumel had the chance to establish himself at the highest level.
For Dallas, Blumel's exit creates competition in training camp, as a number of Texas Stars forwards are likely to compete for roster spots.
