Sidney Crosby and Team Canada Defeated in Historic Upset Against Denmark
Despite having a team filled with NHL stars, the Canadian squad at the 2025 IIHF World Championship suffered a historic upset defeat against Denmark.
This is an upset that will be talked about for weeks on end, that not many people saw coming or would have figured was even realistically possible.
Canada suffered a historic upset defeat against Denmark in quarterfinal action on Thursday at the IIHF World Hockey Championships. Denmark's Nick Olesen scored with under a minute left in regulation, and they held on for the stunning win.
He tucked the puck past the goal line at the side of the net despite goaltender
Jordan Binnington's best efforts, kicking off the celebration while Canadian players and coaches were left in a state of shock.
Canada had gotten a goal earlier in the game from
Travis Sanheim of the Philadelphia Flyers to take the lead, while Denmark countered with a goal from Winnipeg Jets forward
Nikolaj Ehlers late in the contest.
His shot from the point had eyes and somehow made its way past Binnington:
Ehlers had just joined the club recently after he and the rest of his Jets teammates were defeated in the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Dallas Stars. Coincidentally, Ehlers and the Jets had beaten Binnington and his St. Louis Blues teammates just weeks prior in the postseason.
