During last night's pre-game warmups, Penguins' Sidney Crosby was caught skating over to Alex Ovechkin sitting on the boards, where he chirped him over goal 900.

Alex Ovechkin now stands alone in the NHL record books for scoring his 900th career goal, securing the achievement only one day before facing off against his long-standing rival, Sidney Crosby, and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Ovechkin formally broke Wayne Gretzky's record to become the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer on April 6, 2025, with his 895th career goal.
This week, he began yet another chapter in his storied career by reaching the 900-goal milestone, securing his legendary status in the world of professional hockey. It took Ovechkin just 20 years and one month to reach the milestone.
Messages congratulating the Russian superstar flooded in from the hockey world, but the one from Sidney Crosby had some semblance of the humor that characterized their legendary rivalry, one that began with both players' entry into the NHL together in 2005, with the two having played each other nearly 100 times.

Sidney Crosby congratulated Alex Ovechkin on his 900th goal but also humorously chirped him

Before the puck even dropped in their historic 99th matchup, Crosby skated over to give Ovechkin his well-wishes, but, predictably, wasn't able to resist throwing out one last shot before the opening faceoff, prompting laughs from both benches.
"Congrats, man. Of all f***ing goals, a backhand," Crosby joked, referencing Ovechkin's 900th tally, which came off a backhand shot.

"I was surprised, but I'll take it," Ovechkin replied.
The Penguins ended up taking home the 5-3 win, but the real star of the show was clearly the NHL's greatest scoring machine.
It was just the right moment in one of the greatest rivalries in the NHL, a humorous moment between two icons who've elevated each other to heights over the last two decades.
The continued legend of Ovechkin is matched well with his perfect sidekick in Pittsburgh, or the other way around, we should say.
