Over the weekend, the Toronto Maple Leafs faced off against Kyle Dubas and his new team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, marking Dubas' return since his surprising departure last summer under Maple Leafs president of hockey operations Brendan Shanahan.

The game became an opportunity for Toronto fans to reflect on Dubas' tenure as the general manager, a topic discussed during the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. The panel was quick to commend Dubas for his leadership with the Maple Leafs, but not everyone agrees with the praise. On his recent podcast, veteran NHL analyst Don Cherry took issue with his former Hockey Night in Canada colleagues for lauding Dubas while being critical of the former Maple Leafs general manager.
"I don't think he did a good job," Cherry remarked. "I don't understand. The salary cap... he maxed that out, he didn't get by the second round, I just don't think he did a good job."
Despite universal praise from the Hockey Night in Canada panel, including former NHL players Kevin Bieksa and Kelly Hrudey, Cherry believes their compliments might lack sincerity.
"They are gonna meet Dubas in the hall, what are they gonna do, say something bad about him?" questioned Cherry. While many have been praising Dubas for his contributions in Toronto, it's evident that Cherry won't let that praise go unchallenged.
