The Penguins are seemingly up for sale by Fenway Sports Group, and with a new buyer in the race, the shocking price for the team has been revealed by Josh Yohe.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have struggled on the ice for the past few seasons, but now, it appears there could be a struggle for ownership of the team brewing behind the scenes.
It's been known for some time that Mario Lemieux is interested in buying the team back from current owners Fenway Sports Group, and recently, a new party joined the fray as the billionaire Hoffmann Family have expressed interest in buying the team as well.

That could spark a major bidding war to raise the price on the purchase of the Penguins, one which had already grown after the business of the NHL has continued to boom in recent years.
Now, The Athletic's Josh Yohe has revealed just how much it will cost to buy the team, and it only shows how much more expensive things are getting behind the scenes in the NHL.
"Should an offer in the neighborhood of $1.75 billion be thrown at FSG, the source believes a deal could be struck."
According to Yohe, it would likely take an offer in the $1.75 billion range to get FSG interested in potentially selling, and given that this is around the number quoted to bring an expansion team into the league, it makes sense for one of the sports best and most consistent franchises.
At this time, it's unclear which of the Hoffmann Family or the Lemieux led group can come up with the biggest number, but if either can close in on the $1.75 billion mark, it could potentially see the Penguins sold for the second time since 2021.
