The City of Pittsburgh is in mourning following the passing of Dave Parker, a former World Series champion with Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates.
The city of Pittsburgh is a close-knit community, especially when it comes to sports.
Unfortunately, the
city is in mourning today as it was recently announced that former Pittsburgh Pirates World Series winner Dave Parker.
The Pirates announced the sad news on X, while also announcing that he would soon be inducted posthumously into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Dave Parker.
A legendary Pirate, Parker spent 11 years in a Pirates uniform, winning 2 batting titles, an MVP award and a World Series Championship in 1979.
The Cobra was part of the inaugural Pirates Hall of Fame class in 2022, and will be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown next month.
He played for the Pirates from 1973 to 1983 as part of a 19-year MLB career, during which he hit .290 with 339 home runs and 154 stolen bases. He was a 7-time All-Star and earned the 1979 All-Star Game MVP Award. He also won the 1st MLB Home Run Derby title in 1985.
While with Pittsburgh, Parker earned the National League MVP award while also winning a pair of batting titles and earning 3 Gold Glove awards. He also became the 1st MLB player to sign a contract worth $1 million a year.
I could do it all. I vocalized quite a bit. People tell me that I 'played angry.' That's what I did and it worked for me. But I always played hard and I respected my fellow man. I did everything on the field that I could.
