The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking towards the future, but according to a report, they're looking to land a veteran that could help them win now in the off-season.
For much of the 2024/25 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins have made it clear they are looking to re-tool, and with an immense amount of draft capital, they have the opportunity to land some very promising names of the future.
However, if the opportunity presents itself, Kyle Dubas may still look to add some very high level players through free agency, and with
Sidney Crosby still breaking records and playing at an elite level, there's plenty of ways to tempt those players to join the organization.
Now, in the latest piece from
The Hockey News, they have linked the Penguins to one of the biggest names available on the market this summer in
Brad Marchand, a player that has plenty of connections to the Penguins.
Sure, they admit in the piece that it's a long shot, but with Sidney Crosby leading the way, someone Marchand has exceeded with at the international level, there's always going to be a temptation for either he or
Nathan MacKinnon to look to team up with 87 at some point.
Heading into the summer, Kyle Dubas and the Penguins rank 13th in the NHL with a predicted $23 million in salary cap space (according to Spotrac), giving them more than enough room to make a deal happen, but to do so, they'll likely need to show they can contend in Marchand's final few seasons.
At this point in time, it's highly unlikely that Marchand would want to join a Penguins team that is still retooling around Crosby, so while it's probably not going to happen, one can't doubt the persuasion of having the opportunity to play alongside 87 at the NHL level for the veteran.
