Penguins' Latest Goalie Acquisition may Have Messed up Kyle Dubas' Rebuild Plans
The Penguins have just acquired Arturs Silovs from the Canucks, but that may have just messed up the team's rebuild and goalie situation, as the crease is jammed.
The Pittsburgh Penguins filled up the already congested crease on Sunday by acquiring one more name, trading forward Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round draft choice to the Vancouver Canucks for goalie Arturs Silovs.
The move follows Pittsburgh's trade of Alex Nedeljkovic to San Jose, which on its face seemed to be aimed at alleviating their goaltender surplus. Instead, Arturs Silovs's arrival provides another source of uncertainty.
Silovs has just won the Calder Cup championship
Silovs led Abbotsford to their first championship, posting 16-7-0 with five shutouts, a .931 save percentage, and playoff MVP honors.
His NHL numbers, however, are suspect, with a career .880 save percentage and 3.13 goals-against average in 19 games.
With Silovs in, it's going to be harder for the Penguins other goalies to make the roster
This transaction makes life difficult for the rest of the young goalies in Pittsburgh because Joel Blomqvist, Taylor Gauthier, Filip Larsson, and Sergei Murashov are all vying for NHL opportunities.
Absent a corresponding move, Silovs's arrival promises to displace them from developmental opportunities.
Unless GM Kyle Dubas is poised to deal a prospect or otherwise initiate a more extensive alteration, even possibly parting with Tristan Jarry, it's hard to envision where Silovs has long-term space.
It's a cheap risk on a skilled netminder, but until roster clarity presents itself, it could be more of an annoyance than a solution.
