The Pittsburgh Penguins could have a key opportunity after it was announced by the New York Islanders that Semyon Varlamov won't be practicing with them any time soon.
The Pittsburgh Penguins could soon have a prime opportunity ahead of them to acquire more goaltending depth.
Per a new report from New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy, veteran goaltender Semyon Varlamov won't be joining the team for practice any time soon.
Varlamov underwent knee surgery and wasn't expected to be ready to begin the new year, so the Islanders added some depth at the position by signing
David Rittich.
With starter
Ilya Sorokin already the main figure in goal, Varlamov could soon be the odd man out if and when he's ready to return.
Would Semyon Varlamov be a fit with the Penguins
Varlamov has plenty of experience, as he's been in the NHL now for over 15 years and has played with Pittsburgh's former divisional foe Washington Capitals as well as the Colorado Avalanche.
His durability remains a question, as he's missed plenty of time recently because of having undergone surgery. But when healthy, he's been an effective goaltender even as he ages.
The Penguins already made monumental changes in goal when they decided to end the
Alex Nedeljkovic experiment, trading him to the San Jose Sharks with a year left on his contract.
They also acquired
Arturs Silovs from the Vancouver Canucks only weeks after he helped the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks win the Calder Cup.
