The Pittsburgh Penguins have made another signing after they snagged Anthony Mantha in free agency, inking defenseman Phil Kemp from the Edmonton Oilers.
Now, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has added some size on the Pittsburgh blue line, signing 6'3" defenseman Phil Kemp as a Group 6 UFA.
It's a 2-year, 2-way contract that will pay him $775K at the NHL level and $350K at the AHL level, with $350K guaranteed.
For Penguins fans who may not be as familiar with his skill set,
his scouting report via Sports Forecaster reads as follows:
Has excellent size for a modern-day National Hockey League defenseman. Boasts a big shot from the point and defensive chops. Can also play a physical game, but could stand to become more consistent in that area.
After playing for the United States National Development Program, Kemp spent 3 years playing in the NCAA for Yale University. He was taken with the 208th overall pick by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, and spent the majority of his tenure with the franchise suiting up for the AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors.
He played in 56 games with Bakersfield this year and had 12 points (7G, 5A). He only has a single game of NHL experience under his belt, during which he barely reached two full minutes of ice time.
He could have a chance for a bigger role with the Penguins if he earns a roster spot in Training Camp this fall.
