Sidney Crosby Surpasses Wayne Gretzky on All-Time Point List
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby continues to impress in his late 30s, and has moved past Wayne Gretzky's all-time mark of points with a single team.
There's just no slowing down Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby,
who continues to defy Father Time even into his later 30s by playing at a high level and doing everything within his power to help his club challenge for a playoff spot.
During Tuesday's game on home ice against the New York Islanders, Crosby scored with 15 seconds left in the 1st period for his 1,670th NHL point; in doing so, he moved past Wayne Gretzky's mark of points with a single franchise.
He's now in 4th place in NHL history in points scored while wearing a single sweater.
Crosby has played for the Penguins his entire career, captaining them to 3 Stanley Cup victories (2009, 2016, 2017). Even though the Penguins are no longer considered contenders for another title, Crosby has chosen to stick around and signed a multi-year contract extension.
He will be paid his traditional AAV (average annual value) of $8.7 million, a considerable discount on what he could be making with another club.
Shortly after signing the extension before the year began,
Crosby spoke about the importance of winning at this stage of his career.
I think winning is the most important thing to me, and I think [taking a discount is] understanding the dynamic and how it works and trying to give the team the best possible chance to be successful. Ultimately, you've got to go out there and do your best and do your job. I think I'm more focused on that than the number, I guess.
With his goal against the Islanders, Crosby now has 74 points (24G, 50A) in 68 games.
