The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to sign Tyler Bertuzzi before he becomes an unrestricted free agent but if they're unable to, a former team will come calling.

Things didn't go as planned when the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Tyler Bertuzzi to a one-year contract during the off-season. He struggled for the most of the first half of the season, which led many to think the Leafs made a mistake in signing him. But at the end, he emerged as a crucial player for the Leafs.

The Maple Leafs are known to want to keep Bertuzzi around if at all possible, but it appears that other teams in the league, especially the Detroit Red Wings, who drafted him, are interested in signing him for free. This information is reported by Adam Proteau of The Hockey News.

The 29-year-old Bertuzzi skated in 80 games with the Leafs in the previous year, tallying 43 points with 21 goals and 22 assists.

According to Hockey News, the Red Wings have a lot of leeway this offseason with the Salary Cap, which may result in Bertuzzi's comeback. The fit might be there given that and how moved team captain Dylan Larkin was by Bertuzzi's trade.
