TSN analyst Bryan Hayes is ripping the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Mitch Marner sign-and-trade, suggesting malpractice if they knew he was always going to leave.

The Mitch Marner era with the Toronto Maple Leafs came to an official close earlier this summer, as he was sent to the Vegas Golden Knights in a major sign and trade move.
Upon arriving in Vegas, Marner signed an 8 year contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $12 million, a $1.9 million raise from what he was making in his previous contract with Toronto.
The Maple Leafs received Nicolas Roy from the Golden Knights in return for Marner.
But did the Maple Leafs organization know that Marner was going to leave the entire year leading up to the summer? TSN analyst Bryan Hayes is suggesting major malpractice on the part of Toronto GM Brad Treliving and now-former Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan if that were the case.
He was going to Vegas, and only Vegas. I don't think there's any question....I am curious, I'd love to get an answer on what Shanahan and Treliving actually knew this time last year. Did they know he was out? Because now, you hear stories - I don't know how true they are - but everyone knew that Marner was going to Vegas.

If they knew that, that's significant malpractice. If they knew this guy is outta here, and you let him play it out.
Marner is now with the Golden Knights for the next several years, while the Maple Leafs tenure of the "Core 4" of Marner, Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and William Nylander resulted in only 2 postseason series wins.

Mitch Marner previously blocked a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes

Marner, who had a no-trade clause in his previous contract with the Maple Leafs, reportedly blocked a trade that would have sent him to the Carolina Hurricanes back in March.
In return for Marner, the Maple Leafs would have received Mikko Rantanen, who wasn't going to re-sign with the Hurricanes long term.
But because Marner invoked his no-trade clause, Rantanen was instead sent to the Dallas Stars, where he signed a long-term deal.
