Defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who signed a PTO with the Chicago Blackhawks, reportedly turned down a 1 year, $1 million offer from an unnamed Western Conference club per analyst Pierre LeBrun.
Last year with the Pittsburgh Penguins, defenseman Matt Grzelcyk played in all 81 games and had 40 points (1G, 39A), not a bad number for a defenseman.
A UFA, he hasn't been able to find a new full-time NHL deal, but did
accept a PTO (PTO) from the Chicago Blackhawks. But did he make a financial mistake in case things don't work out?
Per a new report from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Grzelcyk rejected a $1 million contract with an unnamed Western Conference team, and also recently changed representation.
The UFA market dried up on defenseman Matt Grzelcyk this summer despite a 40-point season with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2024-25. My understanding is that he did turn down a one-year, $1 million contract from a Western Conference team. He made $2.75 million in Pittsburgh last season.
Whatever the case, he swapped representatives in August. He's now with agent Sean Coffey of Quartexx.

He'll have his chance to earn a contract with the Blackhawks if he impresses during preseason play.
Matt Grzelcyk has played over 500 NHL games
Taken with the 85th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins, Grzelcyk had already played in the area at Boston University.
He played the first few years of his NHL career with the Bruins and also helped them reach the 2019 SCF, where they lost to the St. Louis Blues in 7 games.
After 8 years with the Bruins, he accepted a 1 year, $2.75 million deal with the Penguins for last year.
He's played in 527 total NHL games and has 175 points (26G, 149A).
