Insider reports details of declined trade between Canucks and Sharks

In the offseason, multiple reports surfaced of the Vancouver Canucks looking to move on from defenceman Tyler Myers. Myers had a unique contract situation that paid him a bonus on September 15th, after which a trade was expected. No trade has yet come to pass, and now details have emerged of a failed trade that would've sent Myers to San Jose.

As reported by NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Canucks were inches away from being able to move Myers to the Sharks for forward Kevin Labanc in a one-for-one deal.

According to Seravalli on S&P, the Tyler Myers for SJS Kevin LeBanc trade would have been straight up. But seems like #Canucks scratched that trade for the possibility that if their season goes south, they can trade Myers at the deadline themselves.

Labanc and Myers are both in the final year of their contracts, but it appears that the Canucks could be able to yield something more in assets if they trade Myers closer to the trade deadline. If the Canucks fall short of the playoffs once again, they may enter a full rebuild next season, with the returns of a Myers trade potentially paying dividends.

Only playing out the season will reveal to us if the Canucks can finally live up to expectations, but many do not have high hopes for the team this year.
