Former Pittsburgh Penguins Goalie Signs with New Team In Europe
Former Penguins goaltender Magnus Hellberg has packed his bags and is heading overseas, signing a contract with Djurgardens IF in Sweden.
Hellberg spent last season in the AHL with the Dallas Stars affiliate team
Hellberg, 34, played the 2024-25 season with the Texas Stars of the AHL, where he played 41 games and went 24-14-1 with a 2.69 goals-against average, a .904 save percentage, and one shutout.
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound behemoth of a netminder had a brief stint with the Penguins during the 2023-24 season, playing three games in the NHL. He was 1-0-0 with a 2.50 GAA and .922 save percentage.
Most of that season was spent in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL, where he was 9-8-2 with a 2.92 GAA and .905 save percentage in 19 games.
A Swedish-born product, Hellberg has built an international career over 18 seasons of professional hockey that has taken him to Russia, China, and the North American continent.
"Every hockey journey is different," Hellberg said to TribLive in 2023. "Looking back, obviously when I'm older, done playing, I think it's going to be a pretty cool experience to be able to do what you love and play the game of hockey and live in all these cool places."
Djurgardens IF is number 22 on his resume as a professional team. We wish Hellberg all the best as he continues his career over in Sweden, and we hope to one day see him in the NHL again.
