Per a recent interview, Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas is set to name a new head coach to replace Mike Sullivan in the next 5 days.
The Pittsburgh Penguins, led by general manager Kyle Dubas, decided to move on from head coach Mike Sullivan after he'd spent nearly 10 years on the job.
Sullivan replaced the fired Mike Johnston in December of 2015, and immediately led the team to consecutive Stanley Cup victories and several playoff appearances in the years after that.
But after 3 straight years of being outside of the playoffs, Dubas felt the time was right to make a major change in leadership.
Dubas, who had been
overseeing the Canadian squad in the 2025 IIHF World Championship that was recently upset by Denmark, is set to name a new coach and the official successor to Sullivan within the next few days.
It's been almost a month since the Penguins moved on from Mike Sullivan on April 28th. Kyle Dubas recently said he planned to name a new head coach by June 1st, which believe it or not the start of June is just a few days away on Sunday. That should mean finalization on figuring out who the team wants to hire is coming within the next few days.
Among the candidates reportedly in contention for the job that Dubas was interviewing were former Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft, former Ottawa Senators coach DJ Smith, and former St. Louis Blues coach Drew Bannister.
