Mitch Marner has been facing criticism for his Round 1 performance against Boston, but his teammates, Auston Matthews and William Nylander, aren't buying into the negativity.

The trio, who've been together for 8 seasons, have put up impressive numbers over the years. However, playoff success has been elusive, with only one series win last season.

Despite consistent early exits and heartbreaks, the Maple Leafs have stuck by their core players. But there comes a point where changes need to be considered, especially when looking at teams like Colorado, who've restructured around key players like Landeskog and MacKinnon, leading to Stanley Cup success.

Marner's talent is unquestionable, but some doubt his toughness. The idea of moving him has been floated, although Tavares' hefty contract makes it challenging.

Matthews and Nylander weighed in on the situation. Matthews highlighted the constant scrutiny players face and expressed support for Marner as a teammate and friend.

"In my time here, I've learned there is always a scapegoat, a narrative, something. We love Mitchy, a great teammate, competitor and friend. We take on a lot (including scrutiny) as players and rightfully so. In the end we are also human beings."

Nylander echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Marner's character.

"He's an incredible human being, friend. Love the guy. Look, there's always someone taking heat here regardless of how it's going. But we love him."

Recognizing hockey's business side, these two know change is inevitable in Toronto. It's time to shake things up and give the core a fresh start.
