NHL Insider reveals major breakthrough in Mitchell Miller situation with the Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller last season to an NHL contract, at the time they thought they'd just acquired a very good NHL prospect for absolutely nothing but cash. They actually ended up being on the receiving end of public backlash and faced a PR nightmare. The Bruins finally ended up terminating Miller's deal.
It appeared to many that despite their claims that they had terminated his deal that Miller was still under contract with the Bruins. However today Larry Brooks from the New York Post revealed that is actually not the case. According to Brooks the Bruins came to an agreement and reached a settlement with Miller in February of last year.
Today he released the following information.
per @NYP_Brooksie , the #Bruins have terminated Mitchell Miller's contract.
As his piece mentions Miller was not placed on waivers, rather both parties reached a settlement.
#CapFriendly has learned that Miller was officially removed from Boston's reserve list at end of April.
At no point was Miller placed on unconditional waivers which would allowed the Bruins to buy him out. Buying him out would have instead led the Bruins to facing a salary cap penalty, something they truly can't afford this season given their cap situation. However it appears the NHL has allowed the Bruins to circumvent any penalty for this signing despite the collective agreement.
This is just another black eye on the NHL under Gary Bettman.
