Elliotte Friedman Reveals Frontrunner for Mitch Marner in Free Agency
Top NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman is revealing the likely frontrunner to land pending Toronto Maple Leafs UFA forward Mitch Marner on the open market this summer.
It's going to be one of the most intriguing storylines of the summer - where will pending Toronto Maple Leafs UFA forward Mitch Marner sign?
There will be no shortage of potential suitors for him to choose from, and teams like the Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Utah Mammoth, and Pittsburgh Penguins have all been floated as potential landing spots.
But to almost nobody's surprise, another team that has been suggested with potential to land Marner is the Vegas Golden Knights.
Per a recent report from top NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman, the Golden Knights make "sense" to be a fit for Marner.
However, not everyone agrees with Friedman. Chris Johnston of TSN recently said he believes that while Vegas is never out of the running to land top-name players, they're more likely to try and sign a player like Sam Bennett from the Florida Panthers.
You can never take Vegas out of any major sweepstakes because of the DNA of the franchise (and) obviously the history of moves that we can point to. But, when I look at this free agent class, I think it's more likely we see Vegas land a (Florida Panthers pending free agent) Sam Bennett than a Mitch Marner.
Somehow, there seems to be this notion that they are the favorites - I wouldn't call them the favorites to land Mitch Marner. I think Vegas might be swinging harder for (Bennett) than (Marner) if both of those players end up going (to free agency).
Marner reached a new career-best 102 points (27G, 75A) this year with the Leafs, who were beaten by the Panthers in the 2nd round of the postseason.
