Two Finalists Emerge in New York Islanders GM Search, Per Frank Seravalli
NHL analyst Frank Seravalli reveals that there are a pair of finalists for the now-vacant position of New York Islanders general manager after the departure of Lou Lamoriello.
The New York Islanders decided to make a major change in leadership after they failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season.
Gone is Lou Lamoriello, who had served as both general manager and president of hockey operations. Currently, New York's leadership group is searching for the appropriate candidate to fill that role.
Per NHL analyst Frank Seravalli, the Islanders are zeroing in on a particular pair of candidates who are considered finalists for the job: Marc Bergevin and Mathieu Darche.
If we're handicapping, sources suggest it is a two-horse race at Belmont between Marc Bergevin and Mathieu Darche.
Earlier, Seravalli also indicated that Bergevin had already interviewed with the Islanders and soon secured a second interview, meaning the club has serious interest in him.
Bergevin is currently employed by the Los Angeles Kings as senior advisor to the general manager (most recently Rob Blake, who was dismissed by the team).
He's also worked as director of player personnel with the Chicago Blackhawks, helping them to the 2010 Stanley Cup; he was later promoted to assistant general manager. Bergevin then spent several years as the general manager and executive vice president of the Montreal Canadiens before being dismissed in 2021.
Meanwhile, Darche works as the Director of Hockey Operations for the Tampa Bay Lightning and won back to back Stanley Cups with the club in 2020 and 2021.
