A top Pittsburgh Penguins analyst is blasting Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews after his embarrassing playoff performance as part of Toronto's latest Game 7 loss.
The Toronto Maple Leafs yet again were unsuccessful in their atempt to finally win a Game 7, losing to the divisional foe Florida Panthers on Sunday night 6-1 in embarrassing fashion.
Not only were the Maple Leafs badly outplayed and outshot right from the opening seconds of play, but longtime Toronto nemesis
Brad Marchand twisted the dagger in them for the 5th time in his career.
His 3 points (1G, 2A) helped make him the
1st player in NHL history to go a perfect 5-0 in Game 7 competition against a single team.
On the other hand, Toronto's big name stars of Auston Matthews and
Mitch Marner are being taken to task for their failures to make any kind of meaningful impact in the deciding game.
Pittsburgh Penguins analyst Josh Yohe of The Athletic openly called out Matthews, wondering why the Maple Leafs named him the captain of the club when he can't get it done in the postseason.
I understand the criticism of Marner and it's largely justified. But what about Matthews? He's literally never risen to the occasion in the playoffs and he's Toronto's superstar, the guy the Leafs stripped Tavares of the captaincy for. Always plays small in playoffs. Always.
When told that Matthews has more career goals in the postseason than Marner, Yohe fired right back with this response:
Matthews is twice the goal scorer Marner is though.
Matthews is under contract for another 3 years, while Marner very well may have played his final game in a Maple Leafs sweater.
