Penguins Set to Honor Milestone Tonight Even Longtime Fans Might've Missed
The Penguins are set to honor and celebrate a PPG Paints Arena usher during tonight's game for 64 years of service, as David Blackburn turns 90 years old.
"David Blackburn is more than an usher-he's part of the soul of this building," said Senior Vice President and General Manager, Oak View Group, Gary Desjardins. "His dedication to our fans and this city is nothing short of inspirational. We're honored to celebrate not only his 64 years of service but also his 90th birthday-a milestone that reflects the strength, passion, and spirit that David brings every day."
Blackburn started working at the Civic Arena in 1961, where he established a reputation for his agreeable demeanor, big smile, and memory for fans' names.
David Blackburn Has Been Working Longer Than the Penguins Have Existed
Throughout the decades, he's shared seasons with generations of Penguins enthusiasts, attending thousands of games and events and being a comforting presence in Pittsburgh athletics.
"I never thought I'd be here this long, but I love the people," said Blackburn. "The fans, my coworkers-they're like family to me. This place has been my second home for a long time, and I'm grateful for every moment."
The Penguins will honor Blackburn Saturday night with a ceremonial appearance during the game, presenting him with an honorary key to the arena and a proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh in appreciation for his dedication over the years.
It's a milestone that rarely occurs and proof that the Penguins' narrative isn't one scripted by the players on the ice and between the pipes, but by individuals such as Blackburn, whose generosity and passion have been present for every home game.
