Alex Ovechkin broke some huge records in 2024/25, and now he's revealed what his next steps are moving forward as he nears 40-years of age.

The 2024/25 campaign was a fantastic one for the NHL, with the goal scoring chase of Alex Ovechkin being the biggest story of the year as he finally passed Wayne Gretzky and stood alone as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer.
At 39-years of age, he tallied 44 goals on the year despite also breaking his leg, with many questioning his future in the NHL as he nears 40, and when asked about that future, he responded with a hilarious joke on Saturday.
After that however, he confirmed that he's making his return to the team in 2025/26, and given that he'll be 40 after the season, it's safe to say that this could potentially be his final season in the NHL.
«I was lucky enough this year to be able to score the goals to break the record. I'm looking forward for next year.»
This is a huge development for the Capitals, who have seen Ovechkin in their lineup for the past two decades straight, and with the team only making it past the second-round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs once in his tenure, it's safe to say they're looking to go out on top after a very successful 2024/25 campaign.
Beyond next season however, the Great 8 isn't sure what his place in the NHL holds, and with many believing that he'll potentially play in the KHL once again before he retires, anything is on the table.
«I haven't thought about it yet, but we'll see what's going to happen. I'm going to try to do my best to be able to do well next year, and we'll see.»

For a generation of fans, the NHL has revolved around Oveckin and Sidney Crosby, and to see him retire would leave a major hole in the league, so while he's confirmed to be back for next season, this may be the last we see of him in a Capitals uniform.
