The World Cup of Hockey will officially return in 2028, and now, it's being reported that Pittsburgh has entered the race to be a host city for the event.

In 2025, we saw the return of the NHL to international hockey in a big way with the Four Nations, a tournament that captured the attention of the entire sporting world, not just that of hockey fans.
That will continue in 2026 when the league returns to international play at the 2026 Olympic Games in what is expected to be one of, if not the most loaded tournament in hockey history.
Following that, the NHL looks to keep international hockey as a priority, with the return of the World Cup of Hockey in 2028 and likely every four years beyond that, and now, the NHL and the NHLPA are launching the process to figure out how and where it will be hosted, with Gary Bettman having this to say about the event.
"The World Cup of Hockey is a showcase of international hockey at the highest level, and we are thrilled to begin the host city selection process for 2028.

This tournament offers cities a chance to be part of something truly global, while delivering meaningful economic and cultural benefits in return."

According to reports, Pittsburgh are expected to be one of the cities to put in a bid to host what will be a historic event after Montreal and Boston hosted the Four Nations tournament.
This time around it will be a much bigger event, with 8 countries set to take place in the tournament, and with two host cities set to hold the event once more, there is optimism that if it's held in North America, Pittsburgh could be one of those cities.
Ultimately though, there's many great, hockey loving cities that could be lucky enough to host the event, but for now, all we know is that Pittsburgh is one of those cities.
