Ron MacLean shares what his relationship with Don Cherry is like after Cherry's firing back in 2019

Following the infamous Don Cherry firing, you might recall Ron MacLean doing whatever possible to keep his job with Rogers/Sportsnet, including throwing Cherry under the bus for comments he made about people who had come to Canada from other countries not wearing poppies on Remembrance Day.

You may also recall that Cherry wasn't too fond of MacLean after the incident, stating that the two would never be friends again. The fallout was very public and it appeared to be the end of an era.

According to updated reports, though, it now appears as though that has all changed and the bad blood is no more. On a recent episode of the Bob McCowan podcast, Ron MacLean himself shared the following commentary on the whole thing:

"The way we speak is I phone and then he usually phones back but you know, Don is not big on technology," MacLean said.

MacLean added that he and Cherry's former producer Kathy Broderick and Sportsnet coworker Kevin Bieksa phoned him from the NHL All-Star Game in Sunrise, Florida, this past February.

"We all sent greetings. And then I phoned him when Mayor Hazel McCallion, longtime mayor of Mississauga, passed, I offered to take Don to the funeral, but it would have been, you know, a bit of an event if he was there. So he asked not to. I phoned him again on June 1 on the anniversary of [Don's late wife] Rose's passing," MacLean added.

Ron and Don were thick as thieves for a lot of years, co-hosting Coach's Corner on Hockey Night in Canada from 1986 through 2019, and while Don was rightfully upset with MacLean following his dismissal in 2019, it's nice to know that the two longtime friends have since patched things up.
